PITTSBURGH, PA — City officials this week announced an expansion of green infrastructure projects aimed at improving stormwater management and reducing flooding risks in vulnerable neighborhoods.
The initiative will focus on installing rain gardens, permeable pavement, and enhanced drainage systems in areas that have experienced recurring water runoff issues. Officials say these solutions are designed to capture and manage stormwater more effectively while also improving neighborhood aesthetics.
Environmental planners noted that green infrastructure can play a critical role in reducing pressure on aging sewer systems while supporting urban sustainability goals. The projects are expected to also create new green spaces that benefit both residents and local ecosystems.
Community organizations will partner with the city to help identify priority areas and assist with project implementation. Educational programs are also planned to help residents understand how green infrastructure can support long‑term environmental resilience.
Construction on the first phase of projects is expected to begin later this year, with additional locations planned as funding and community partnerships expand.
