PITTSBURGH, PA — The Pittsburgh Steelers and Giant Eagle announced a community partnership Monday to provide free lunches for students attending City of Pittsburgh CitiParks Recreation Centers on select days when Pittsburgh Public Schools are closed or dismiss early.
City of Pittsburgh Recreation Centers are extending operating hours and offering additional programming to provide a safe, supportive environment for students during school closures. Because meal services typically provided through schools are unavailable on those days, the Steelers and Giant Eagle are partnering with CitiParks to ensure children attending ten participating recreation centers have access to daily lunch.
Officials emphasized the critical role regular nutrition plays for local youth when schools are not in session. Pittsburgh Steelers Senior Director of Community Relations Blayre Holmes Davis noted that school meals represent an important source of daily nutrition for many families, adding that the organization and Giant Eagle are proud to help bridge nutritional gaps during closures.
Mayor Corey O’Connor commended the collaboration, highlighting that recreation centers serve as essential community resources offering childcare while classes are out. Giant Eagle Senior Director of Public Relations and Sports Partnerships Dan Donovan stated that both organizations share a commitment to supporting the region and ensuring students receive meals when they need them most.
