PITTSBURGH, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a major 25-day full closure of Interstate 376 (Parkway East) starting Friday, July 10, 2026, to facilitate the Commercial Street Bridge Replacement Project.
The total shutdown will affect both eastbound and westbound lanes between the Squirrel Hill Tunnel and the Edgewood/Swissvale interchange (Exit 77), remaining in effect through August 3. Crews will employ Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) techniques, which involve building the new bridge structure adjacent to the highway and sliding it into position to minimize long-term closures.
Detour Routes and Traffic Impacts:
- Primary Detours: Motorists will be redirected onto local arterial routes, including Forbes Avenue, Fifth Avenue, and Penn Avenue.
- Expected Congestion: Heavy delays and significant travel backups are anticipated throughout the area. Drivers are encouraged to plan alternative routes or adjust travel times.
- Transit Alternatives: Public safety officials recommend utilizing the busway or public transit options during the 25-day construction period.
PennDOT officials urge motorists to use extreme caution, stay alert for temporary signage, and expect increased travel times. Real-time updates, traffic cameras, and specific detour maps are available online at the official project portal at pa.gov/CommercialStBridge or via 511PA.com.
