PITTSBURGH, PA — Pittsburgh’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure has secured $2,332,540 in regional grants for improvements at a major Bloomfield intersection and restoration of a closed section of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail in Chateau.
The Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission awarded $1,322,540 through its Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside Program for traffic-signal and intersection upgrades where the Bloomfield Bridge meets Liberty Avenue and Main Street. City officials said the project will rebuild the complex intersection to improve pedestrian safety, reduce vehicle conflicts and make transit more accessible.
The Bloomfield project is expected to cost $3.65 million, supported by the regional award, a Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development Multimodal Transportation Fund grant and local matching funds. DOMI is working with PennDOT to contract a design team.
The commission also approved $1 million in Smart Transportation for Livable Communities funding for slope stabilization and trail restoration in Chateau. A section of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail between Branchport Street and Columbus Avenue failed last summer, forcing a neighborhood detour. The new funding will support engineering and construction intended to reopen that portion of the trail.
