PITTSBURGH, PA — The City of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy celebrated the opening of the new McKinley Park Community Grove, completing a nearly $700,000 investment in a historic gathering space in one of the city’s oldest parks.
The project transforms the Chicken Hill section of McKinley Park, located just below Michigan Street, into a flexible, nature-based gathering space designed for recreation, outdoor education, and community connection. The site, once home to a resident-built baseball field, serves the Hilltop neighborhoods of Beltzhoover, Allentown, Knoxville, Bon Air, and surrounding communities. The revitalization marks another phase following the adoption of the McKinley Park Master Plan in 2016.
Developed in collaboration with neighborhood organizations including the Beltzhoover Consensus Group, Knoxville Community Council, Voices Against Violence, and Hilltop Alliance, the new amenities include a 20-foot hexagonal shade pavilion with a surrounding seat wall, open lawn recreation space, a dedicated outdoor learning area, improved trail connections, stairs, pathways, stormwater drainage infrastructure, expanded ecological restoration areas, and preserved historic baseball backstop posts. Project funding was provided through the City of Pittsburgh Parks Tax Trust Fund alongside support from the Henry L. Hillman Foundation, Pennsylvania American Water, and the American Water Charitable Foundation.
