PITTSBURGH, PA — The City of Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy have received a 2026 Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Award for the rehabilitation of the Valley Refuge Shelter in Riverview Park.
The project received a Construction Award for Rehabilitation from Preservation Pennsylvania. The statewide honor recognizes work that preserves historic places while adapting them for continued community use.
Built in the late 1930s through the Works Progress Administration, the shelter had deteriorated over decades. The rehabilitation included historically appropriate masonry work, a new roof and flashing, restoration of the original flagstone floor, electrical upgrades, renovated restrooms and accessibility improvements.
The city said the restoration was supported by Pittsburgh’s Parks Tax Trust Fund, a Keystone Historic Preservation Construction Grant and private philanthropic funding. The shelter has returned to use as a community gathering place and is among the city park system’s most frequently rented shelters.
The City of Pittsburgh and the Parks Conservancy are among 21 honorees scheduled to be recognized at the 2026 Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Awards ceremony on Sept. 16 in York.
