PITTSBURGH, PA — Pittsburgh will receive more than $1.5 million in state funding to replace aging traffic signals at three intersections in the South Side Flats, Lawrenceville and Larimer, city officials announced Wednesday.
The Department of Mobility and Infrastructure was awarded $1,533,315 through PennDOT’s Green Light-Go Program. The work will target Bingham Street and 10th Street in the South Side Flats, Butler Street and Main Street in Lawrenceville, and East Liberty Boulevard and Larimer Avenue in Larimer.
Planned improvements include LED signal heads, accessible pedestrian signals, pedestrian countdown timers and other upgrades intended to improve visibility, accessibility and traffic operations. The city said some locations will also receive concrete bumpouts to shorten pedestrian crossings and slow turning vehicles.
Design work for all three intersections is expected to begin in fall 2026, with construction anticipated in spring 2027.
The projects have an estimated combined cost of about $1.9 million. Pittsburgh will provide the required 20% local match, approximately $383,000, in addition to the state grant.
Mayor Corey O’Connor said the improvements support the city’s Vision Zero commitment and will make travel safer for people walking, biking, using transit and driving. Green Light-Go is a competitive PennDOT program that helps municipalities modernize traffic signals to improve safety and traffic flow.
