PITTSBURGH, PA — Pittsburgh Public Schools welcomed most students back Monday for the 2026–2027 school year after months of preparation across academics, transportation, technology, facilities, safety and student services.
The district said every student will have access to a district-issued device on the first day. Families can use an expanded Home Access Center to view transportation information, grades, attendance, report cards and required back-to-school forms. Real-time StopFinder bus tracking is also being expanded to all First Student buses.
PPS reported that instructional updates include new reading materials for kindergarten through fifth grade, updated resources for grades six through 12, a new AP Precalculus curriculum and STEAM unit maps for elementary grades. Culturally relevant Rising Voices classroom libraries have been placed in every kindergarten-through-third-grade classroom.
For safety, staff are receiving in-person training on the district’s Standard Response Protocol, which establishes common procedures for hold, secure, lockdown, evacuation and shelter actions. The district will continue using its Raptor visitor-management system in every school.
District officials said 70% of identified staff vacancies had been filled as of Aug. 7, while recruiting, hiring and employee-clearance work continued. PPS is also expanding its Bridges Academy emotional-support model and launching Pathfinder, an internal platform intended to help counselors, social workers and school leaders coordinate student support.
The first day for students other than kindergarten was Monday, Aug. 24. Kindergarten students are scheduled to begin Thursday, Aug. 27.
