PITTSBURGH, PA — Pittsburgh Animal Care & Control officers and city police recovered 11 dogs, two puppies and one cat from an unoccupied Westwood home after responding to community concerns about possible animal cruelty, city officials said.
Officers went to the home in the 1300 block of Barr Avenue on Wednesday, Sept. 2. After receiving no response from occupants, they heard animals in distress and detected a strong odor of urine, feces and decay, according to the City of Pittsburgh.
The 14 living animals were taken to Human Animal Rescue. Officials said at least two other dogs were found dead inside and described conditions in the home as deplorable.
Plainclothes detectives are investigating. No arrests had been made when the city issued its announcement, and the investigation remains ongoing.
