PITTSBURGH, PA — Rialto Street will close to vehicle traffic for an estimated one to two months while Pittsburgh crews repair the abutments of the Lowrie Street Bridge in Troy Hill, according to the city.
The Department of Mobility and Infrastructure said work is scheduled to begin Monday, Sept. 14. The closure will cover Rialto Street between Ley Street and Route 28.
Pedestrian access on Rialto Street will remain open during construction. Drivers will be detoured by way of Route 28, Chestnut Street and Troy Hill Road, while the Lowrie Street Bridge itself is expected to remain open.
The project includes replacing aged and deteriorated stones with local quarry sandstone, cleaning the abutments and repointing masonry. Although the bridge’s concrete beams and deck were replaced in 2020 and 2021, the city said the structure has retained a “poor” rating because of the condition of the abutments supporting each end.
