PITTSBURGH, PA — Pittsburgh Police filed charges and issued an arrest warrant Friday for a 39-year-old Pittsburgh man in connection with a July vehicle-pedestrian collision in the South Side Flats, according to a city Public Safety release.
Police identified the accused as Matthew Demopoulos. The charges include aggravated assault by vehicle, accidents involving death or personal injury, careless driving and reckless driving, the release said.
The original incident occurred at about 7:45 p.m. July 15 near South 28th and Sidney streets. Police, firefighters and emergency medical crews found an adult man in the roadway with injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle. Pittsburgh EMS took him to a hospital in critical condition.
Witnesses told police that the injured man had been working at an outdoor event and staffing a nearby barricade when an unauthorized vehicle entered the area, struck him and the barricade, and left the scene. Investigators later recovered the vehicle in the 4700 block of Baum Boulevard.
The city’s Collision Investigation Unit handled the investigation. The charges are allegations, and the accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
