Pittsburgh Recreation Centers Extend Hours on PPS Days Off

PITTSBURGH, PA — City recreation centers will open earlier on Pittsburgh Public Schools closure days and early-dismissal days during the 2026-27 school year, providing free care and programming for Pittsburgh students and families.

According to the City of Pittsburgh, participating centers will open at 8 a.m. on full-day school closures and at 11:30 a.m. on early-dismissal days. Registration is required and opens Tuesday, Sept. 15. Parents and guardians can register at the recreation center their children will attend and may select multiple eligible dates.

The early-dismissal schedule includes Sept. 18, Oct. 9, Oct. 23, Nov. 20, Dec. 18, Feb. 12, Feb. 26 and March 12. Full-day coverage is scheduled for Sept. 21; Oct. 12 for high schools and grades 6-12 schools; Oct. 16 for elementary, middle and K-8 schools; Nov. 3; Dec. 28-31; Jan. 19-20; March 10; March 22-26; and May 18.

Some recreation centers will not offer care on election days because they serve as polling locations. The city said Ammon, Ormsby, Jefferson and Magee recreation centers will be open on those days.

Afternoon snacks will be provided on early-dismissal days, while lunch and snacks will be available on full-day closures. CitiParks plans to announce special programming and partner visits through its social-media channels.
