PITTSBURGH, PA — Pittsburgh Police arrested a 22-year-old man Friday afternoon after he allegedly threatened two young boys with a knife at a park in the city’s North Side neighborhood, authorities announced Monday.
According to the Pittsburgh Bureau of Public Safety, Zone 1 officers were dispatched around 1:20 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23, to a park located at Cedar Avenue and Pressley Street following a 911 report that a man was threatening children with a knife.
A responding officer located a man matching the caller’s description immediately upon arriving at the scene. When the suspect spotted the officer, he fled on foot and pulled a knife from the ground. The officer chased the suspect and issued verbal commands ordering him to halt and drop the weapon.
Police said the suspect quickly complied, discarded the knife, and lay down on his back. The officer placed him in handcuffs without further incident. Neither of the two juvenile boys was harmed during the encounter. Officers interviewed the boys, whose accounts were corroborated by video evidence, and returned them safely home to their families.
The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Almondo Butcher, was arrested at the scene and transported to the Allegheny County Jail, where he is being held without bail. Butcher faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault, simple assault, harassment, recklessly endangering another person, disorderly conduct, and possessing instruments of a crime.
