Pittsburgh Restricts 28th Street Bridge to Single Inbound Lane for Inspection Detour

PITTSBURGH, PA — The City of Pittsburgh Department of Mobility and Infrastructure announced that the 28th Street Bridge is restricted to a single inbound lane of traffic beginning Tuesday, November 3, 2026, following a bridge inspection conducted in coordination with PennDOT.

Under the new long-term traffic pattern, the bridge maintains only inbound and downhill travel. The outbound and uphill lane is closed to vehicular traffic, with outbound motorists detoured from Liberty Avenue to Bigelow Boulevard via the Bloomfield Bridge to Paulowna Street. Vehicular detour signage has been established along the detour route. The southern sidewalk is also closed, requiring pedestrians crossing 28th Street to use the northern sidewalk to continue across the bridge.

City officials said the single-lane configuration preserves inbound transit service and emergency vehicle access. Pittsburgh Regional Transit continues to service all outbound 54D bus stops by using an alternate detour route along Herron Avenue.

DOMI Chief Engineer Eric Setzler emphasized that the department works closely with bridge inspection teams to monitor conditions across all municipal structures, noting that the city is taking decisive action to protect public safety while recognizing the impact of the detour on residents in Polish Hill. A contracted engineering team with PennDOT oversight is currently midway through final design work for a comprehensive rehabilitation of the 28th Street Bridge, tentatively scheduled to begin construction in 2028 with full reopening planned in 2030.
