City of Pittsburgh Swears in Mat Davis as New Fire Chief

PITTSBURGH, PA — Mat Davis was officially sworn in on Thursday as Chief of Fire for the City of Pittsburgh during a ceremony attended by family, friends, colleagues, and city leadership.

Public Safety Director Sheldon Williams opened the ceremony by addressing Chief Davis directly, emphasizing that the oath of office represents a binding promise to serve with honor, lead with integrity, protect with courage, and maintain accountability to the residents of Pittsburgh.

Before the swearing-in, Mayor Corey O’Connor thanked the family and friends who supported and encouraged Davis throughout his firefighting career. The mayor highlighted that Davis had stepped naturally into the leadership role during his recent tenure as acting chief, making his appointment a clear choice for the administration.

Following the oath, Chief Davis addressed the gathering, thanking mentors and colleagues across his career journey. Davis began his firefighting service with the Dormont Fire Department in 2004, where he rose to become chief, and previously served part-time with the Swissvale and North Strabane fire departments. In 2023, he joined the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire as Assistant Chief of Community Risk Reduction before being appointed acting chief earlier this year.

Chief Davis also serves as a mentor and instructor for recruit classes and partner agencies. He earned a bachelor’s degree and an MBA from Point Park University and is a graduate of the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program.
