PITTSBURGH, PA — City officials this week announced an expanded community tree planting initiative aimed at increasing Pittsburgh’s urban canopy and improving neighborhood green spaces.
The program will focus on planting hundreds of new trees along residential streets, parks, and public gathering areas across several neighborhoods identified as having limited tree coverage. Urban forestry experts say expanding the city’s canopy can help reduce summer heat, improve air quality, and manage stormwater runoff.
Local nonprofit organizations and neighborhood volunteers are expected to play a central role in the planting efforts. Community groups will assist with organizing planting days, maintaining newly planted trees, and helping residents learn about long‑term tree care.
City leaders say the initiative is part of a broader sustainability strategy designed to enhance environmental resilience while making neighborhoods more attractive and livable.
Planting is expected to begin this spring, with additional phases planned over the next several years as funding and community partnerships expand.
