PITTSBURGH, PA — City leaders this week unveiled plans to expand recreational space along several sections of Pittsburgh’s riverfront, aiming to create new parks, trails, and gathering areas for residents and visitors.
The proposal focuses on underutilized stretches of land near the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers where officials say new green spaces could improve neighborhood access to outdoor recreation. Early plans include walking paths, bike lanes, small performance spaces, and landscaped seating areas designed to host community events.
Urban planners involved in the project say riverfront development has become an important part of Pittsburgh’s long‑term strategy to enhance quality of life while strengthening connections between neighborhoods and the city’s waterways.
Community groups are expected to participate in upcoming planning sessions where residents will have opportunities to share ideas for park features, recreational programming, and environmental improvements.
If approved, initial development work could begin next year following environmental reviews and final design planning.
