Pittsburgh Expands Green Infrastructure Projects to Improve Stormwater Management

PITTSBURGH, PA — City officials this week announced an expansion of green infrastructure projects aimed at improving stormwater management and reducing flooding risks across Pittsburgh neighborhoods.

The initiative will focus on installing rain gardens, green roofs, and permeable pavement systems designed to absorb and manage runoff more effectively. Officials say these solutions can help ease pressure on aging drainage systems while enhancing environmental sustainability.

According to city planners, priority will be given to neighborhoods that have experienced recurring flooding issues during heavy rainfall. The program will also include upgrades to existing infrastructure to better integrate natural water management techniques.

Environmental experts noted that green infrastructure not only reduces flood risks but also improves water quality, supports urban biodiversity, and enhances public spaces. Community engagement efforts will be included to educate residents on the benefits and maintenance of these systems.

The first phase of the expansion is expected to begin later this year, with additional projects planned as funding and community partnerships continue to grow.
