PITTSBURGH, PA — City officials announced a new round of downtown corridor safety upgrades this week aimed at improving daily travel for pedestrians, bus riders, and drivers moving through some of Pittsburgh’s busiest commercial blocks.
The effort will focus on refreshed crosswalk markings, updated traffic signal timing, improved curb visibility, and additional safety signage near high-foot-traffic intersections where transit activity and vehicle congestion regularly overlap during peak hours.
Local transportation planners said the project is designed to reduce bottlenecks while making it easier for residents, commuters, and visitors to navigate between office buildings, retail destinations, and public transit stops across the downtown core.
Officials said the work will be phased to limit disruption, with priority areas selected based on recent traffic studies, pedestrian volume data, and feedback from neighborhood stakeholders who have pushed for practical infrastructure improvements that can be delivered quickly.
Supporters of the plan say the upgrades reflect a broader strategy to modernize street-level mobility, strengthen public safety, and make central Pittsburgh more accessible as development activity continues across surrounding business and residential districts.
