PITTSBURGH, PA — Pittsburgh is moving ahead with a new round of downtown riverfront safety upgrades aimed at making travel easier and safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders.
City officials said the work will focus on clearer crossings, better lighting, improved wayfinding, and small design changes that can reduce confusion at busy intersections near the riverfront. The goal is to make the core of the city feel more connected without requiring a massive construction overhaul.
The project also reflects a broader push to support walkable neighborhoods and transit-friendly streets. By improving the spaces people already use every day, leaders say the city can strengthen local business access and create a more reliable experience for residents, commuters, and visitors.
Officials expect the first phase of improvements to begin with targeted corridor work and safety assessments before larger adjustments are rolled out. The city says residents should see the biggest impact in areas where foot traffic and transit activity are heaviest.
