Pittsburgh Public Safety Teams Resolve Homewood Barricade Incident

PITTSBURGH, PA — Pittsburgh police, firefighters and paramedics resolved a Homewood North barricade incident Friday after negotiators and social workers helped bring an armed-response call to a peaceful surrender, according to a city public safety release.

The city said Zone 5 officers were called at about 8:30 a.m. to the 1200 block of Pineridge Street for reports of a disturbance involving an adult man trying to enter a residence. Officials said the man was known to officers because of outstanding warrants and mental health concerns.

Police said the man was inside the home when officers arrived and began making threats against officers and threats of self-harm. After he barricaded himself in the residence, a SWAT callout was initiated shortly after 9:30 a.m.

About an hour later, officials said, the man ignited a fire inside the structure. Pittsburgh Fire quickly extinguished it, and Pittsburgh EMS remained part of the response.

Social workers from the city’s Office of Community Health and Safety responded to the scene and worked with SWAT negotiators to convince the man to surrender without further incident. He was taken into custody just before noon and transported by Pittsburgh EMS to a local hospital for medical evaluation.

The city said the man will be taken to the Allegheny County Jail upon release from the hospital, with additional charges forthcoming. The incident was reported by the City of Pittsburgh in a June 12 public safety blotter release titled “Pittsburgh Police, Fire, & EMS Respond to Male Barricaded in Homewood.”
