PITTSBURGH, PA — Pittsburgh youth will have a new way to connect with World Cup excitement this summer through free soccer clinics scheduled for July 4, July 5 and July 9 on the field used by the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pitt Panthers.
The City of Pittsburgh announced the clinics on June 18, saying the program is being organized by CitiParks, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, SportsPITTSBURGH and Special Olympics Pennsylvania as part of the Pennsylvania World Cup Fan Zone.
Mayor Corey O’Connor said the free clinics are intended to give local families a chance to take part in the World Cup atmosphere while young athletes learn soccer skills from professional coaches. CitiParks Director Eric Sloan said the sessions are designed for children who are new to soccer as well as those already involved in the sport.
The July 4 and July 5 clinics are free for children age 14 and under, with registration required. The July 4 sessions are scheduled for 8:00 to 9:15 a.m. and 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., while the July 5 sessions are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and 12:30 to 1:45 p.m.
A July 9 clinic is planned for Special Olympics athletes from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. City officials said the sessions will be led by coaches from the USL champion Pittsburgh Riverhounds Academy.
SportsPITTSBURGH Vice President of Sports Events Jim Britt said the effort is meant to bring a piece of the global World Cup moment to Pittsburgh while creating a community impact for young players and fans.
