Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon Expand Five-Year Partnership for Youth Tech and Infrastructure

PITTSBURGH, PA — Mayor Corey O’Connor announced an expanded partnership between the City of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, with CMU committing $3 million over five years to support education and infrastructure initiatives across the city.

City officials said part of the funding will support Rec2Tech, a program operating at city recreation centers where young people can build technology skills. Another portion will go toward neighborhood infrastructure projects aimed at improving green spaces and expanding pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle access on city streets.

O’Connor thanked CMU for what he called an investment in Pittsburgh’s future, saying the university has been a longtime partner and neighbor that supports the city’s technology and innovation ecosystem. The mayor said the gift will help the city invest in Rec2Tech opportunities for young people while maintaining infrastructure in local communities.

CMU President Farnam Jahanian said the university’s success has long been intertwined with Pittsburgh and that CMU wants to continue supporting communities across the city. The official announcement said CMU already supports K-12 students through tutoring, online learning platforms, pre-college programs, summer camps, and continuing education and training for local teachers in areas including artificial intelligence and robotics.
