Police Investigate Fatal Bennett Street Pedestrian Collision

PITTSBURGH, PA — Pittsburgh public safety officials are investigating a fatal vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision reported late Thursday on Bennett Street at Oakwood Street, along the Homewood South and East Hills neighborhood border.

According to a City of Pittsburgh public safety blotter published Friday, Pittsburgh Police from Zone 5, Pittsburgh EMS and Pittsburgh Fire were dispatched at approximately 11:30 p.m. for reports of a pedestrian collision. Responders found an adult male in the roadway with injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle, and medics pronounced him dead at the scene.

The city said an initial SUV had been traveling westbound on Bennett Street toward Oakwood Street when it hit the pedestrian, who had been walking in the roadway. The adult male driver of that SUV stayed at the scene and was described by police as highly cooperative.

The SUV driver told officers that after he exited his vehicle to check on the victim, another vehicle traveling on Bennett Street also struck the victim. Police said witness statements corroborated the SUV driver’s account.

Investigators said the second vehicle was a gray Toyota Prius whose driver did not remain at the scene. Collision Investigation Unit detectives responded to process evidence, including a review of camera footage.

The victim’s identity is expected to be released by the Office of the Allegheny County Medical Examiner. City officials said the investigation remains ongoing.
