Former Pittsburgh Police Commander Karen Dixon Named Assistant Chief of Administration

PITTSBURGH, PA — Former Pittsburgh Police Commander Karen Dixon has been appointed assistant chief of administration for the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, effective June 29.

The bureau said Dixon previously served 33 years with Pittsburgh police. She is returning in a civilian capacity to take on the administration leadership role.

During her earlier service, Dixon held several positions, including work as a member of the federal consent decree compliance team. She also served as the lieutenant in charge of the Police Training Academy and as commander of Zone 3 Police Station.

As assistant chief of administration, Dixon will oversee administrative functions for the bureau. The city said the role also includes supporting the operational mission, investing in personnel, and maintaining standards of professionalism and accountability.

Police Chief Jason Lando said Dixon’s return is a tremendous gain for the bureau and the city. He said she is a proven leader who understands how to build a strong police department, and said her integrity, experience and commitment to excellence make her the ideal person to lead the Administration Bureau.

Dixon is a two-time graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Administration of Justice and a Master of Public Policy and Management.

The appointment was announced June 29, the same day Dixon began in the position.
