PITTSBURGH, PA — Pittsburgh’s Garbage Olympics marked its 10th year Saturday with 709 volunteers from 50 neighborhoods collecting 1,290 bags of trash and hundreds of bulky discarded items, according to the City of Pittsburgh.
The annual cleanup competition, held Sept. 19, also removed 744 tires, 244 televisions and 548 bulk items from neighborhoods across the city. Teams competed for awards including most trash collected, largest volunteer turnout, strangest item found and dirtiest volunteer.
Allentown collected the most trash, including 29 bags of garbage, 346 tires, 37 televisions and 29 bulk items. South Side Flats fielded the largest team with 110 volunteers, while Sheraden claimed the strangest-item award after participants found chimpanzee bookends. Brookline produced this year’s “dirtiest volunteer.”
Over the event’s first decade, more than 5,000 volunteers have collected more than 10,000 bags of trash, 3,700 tires, 1,600 televisions and 3,000 bulk items, the city said.
Mayor Corey O’Connor thanked the organizers and participants, describing the neighborhood competition as an example of community partnership and civic pride. The Department of Public Works, the Clean Pittsburgh Commission and other partners supported the cleanup and removal effort.
